PCM or WMA 9 lossless before Mp3?

Posted by mwalsh on 02/06/06 23:51

So perhaps it wasn't the right choice, but I bought Total Recorder to
record Internet Radio. I really wasn't bothered about the idea of Mp3s
at the time and was planning on recording into WMA 9 lossless (which TR
does really well) for playback using Windows Media Player on this Vaio
mini-notebook I own.

Well, I've decided now that even the Vaio is too big to be lugging
around and so I've got a 512mb Creative Muvo on the way. But now I need
to find a way to get to nice quality Mp3s (or WMAs) out of the original
source material and, sadly, TR only supports upto 56k Mp3s. A real
shortcoming as it turns out.

So what would be my best way to quality Mp3s using the combination of
TR and CDex?

I was thinking that recording the stream in PCM and then using CDex to
convert to (at least) 128k Mp3 was the way to go. But what about
recoding the stream in WMA 9 lossless and then converting to Mp3, would
there be significant quality loss? I thought the whole point of the
lossless format is so there wouldn't be.

And then what about upping the bit rate in CDex? I see that it can do
upto a 320k bit rate. Would that give so much better a recording than
128k?

Thanks in advance for helpful comments and insight!
