Take the next leap in music piracy, where whole cd's worth of 192+
music are laying there ready for you to download at much faster rates
than any gnutella network... Where the people have a "collector"
spirit (for the most part) and don't upload poor quality files.
You are already there, and you don't know it. It's called usenet. The
same format that we are typing these messages on, holds the best
repository of music and movies on the web, and most people don't even
know it. The music is located in the alt.sounds.mp3... hiarchy groups.
All you need is a news server that provides the binary groups (like
Verizon which comes free with your account) or to pay for a news
server with someone like Giganews in which it costs about $12 a month
and you get incredibly fast download speeds and near 100% completion
with about 15 days retention. That's really worth it when you figure
for that $12 you'll download about 20-30 cd's.
For software, you need a newsreader capable of decoding yenc files.
There are some free ones, I use forte inc's Agent. Been using it for
about 7 years. It costs about $25 I think. And once you get a
newsreader, you'll find that reading and responding to these posts is
much more pleasant with a newsreader and a news server than using
Google Groups.
It's not hard to set up and use. If you can use the stuff you are
using now, you can do this. It will just take reading some
instructions, doing some searches, and maybe coming to a group like
this and asking questions. If you get Agent, at www.forteinc.com ,
there is an incredibly supported techie group at
alt.usenet.offline-reader.forte-agent which if you go there, someone
will help you set up your preferences to get you started. Just don't
tell them you are going to be scarfing music.
