Only one question remained unanswered: how Joshua got his name. He refused t
o tell me.
"It did," Gwedif said, and motioned to the Yherajk near my feet. "Carl, plea
se meet the progeny of 2000 Yherajk -- and one human."
Roland and I caught the subtext of that statement; Michelle did not. Instead
she smiled brightly. "Thank you," she said. Avika smiled thinly. It was goi
ng to be a tougher crowd than I had expected.
"I figured as much," Miranda said. "But it's important to me. And it's the o
nly way I'll do it."
