Devices like that have more or less existed for quite a while now,
'pocket' sized units with TFT screens and a high capacity harddrive
capable of playing & recording video & audio.
I'd get one but they're still pretty expensive and I'd only go for one
that can play/record in full PAL & NTSC resolution. For now I'm carrying
round a 40gb mp3 player which is nice.
But on the ripping side of things, to put a DVD onto the portable video
devices you do have to break the CSS encoding on the disc which is a
no-no in the movie industry's eyes.
Which is why nobody to my knowledge has produced a piece of software that
will turn your PC into a full-blown DVD jukebox, allowing you to just put
the DVD in the drive and it'll copy & catalogue the disc onto the hd for
you to watch whenever you want (although I'll probably be proved wrong
here :) )
You can buy a CD jukebox that works in the way I just mentioned and the
process of putting CDs onto the jukebox's harddrive is legal.
