I've been using a Yamada DX6700 DVD player for a while now.
I'm happy with its perfomance in most respects. It plays most things
with only the occasional glitch: mainly the odd audio sync problem.
The firmware upgrades from the manufacturer however have been less than
impressive. They don't produce them themselves AFAICS and try to
persuade (not too successfully) the chipset vendors to produce fixes and
updates.
They also have a habit of stopping producing updates after a relatively
short while and not producing any more official updates (a ridiculous 6
months in the 6700 case) and then coming out with a new model.
One reason I purchased the 6700 was Ogg support. This was always
incomplete though with zero chance of an official fix now.
There is a hacker community that enhances the firmware for many players
but they can only do so much. At least so far.
This does highlight what I'd regard the rather dodgy nature of this
whole area: cheaper players can be almost identical to more expensive
ones except they have certain areas of the firmware deliberately
disabled to cripple them.
Steve.
