I would agree that he is in danger of doing this a little too often.
Guess he thought his first movie (as a director) would be seen by a lot
of people unfamiliar with his work, and so the tactic of killing someone
to make the audience fear for everyone else was one worth using again.

Again, when a happy relationship forms in a Joss show it usually means
one of the couple will die soon. Again it is something I'd like to have
seen him change if he had stuck to TV, especially with Zoe and Wash.

In the context of the movie I think the death worked, and certainly
don't think it was cheap or meaningless as I have heard some people
claim. The character died a hero having just crash-landed the ship and
saving the whole crew.

I don't think I would have liked the manner of death so much if it had
happened in Firefly, but in the movie I think it worked well, however
sorry I was to see the end of the character. The stakes have to be
raised in a movie to keep an audience's interest, and so that's why this
worked for me.

Something I forgot to mention in a previous post was Zoe's reaction. I
have read complaints abouther reaction. Anyone that took notice of her
in the show shouldn't be surprised at her going into soldier mode. She
was in a war where she saw friends killed, and had to fight on. That
what she does here, but this time almost gets herself killed by not
keeping control of herself completely. I thought her reaction was
completely in keeping with the character.

Jason.
