Since "Dr. Strangelove" had hard mattes (to create the varying aspect
ratio), there is no source of that film *without* black bars. You can't
create an open matte of the film.
Likewise, "2001" was filmed using anamorphic lenses, and there is no way
to "open matte" this, either.
So, two of your four examples really aren't very good.
