You really need to include some spoiler space. Not everyone who wants to
see the movie will have seen it yet.

He successfully glided the ship in for a crash landing, saving everyone
on the ship. That made him a hero. He then died. He didn't stop being a
hero because of that. I do see what you are saying, but I don't agree
with it. As regards pointlessness, it raised the stakes for the final
battle immensely. Didn't you fear for everyone's life after that?
It was a shocking and in some ways cruel (we're still laughing at him)
death, but that happens in life. Some people don't want to see stuff
like that in their entertainment. I have no problem with that view, but
ultimately this movie, which was already great, became even more
memorable because of this scene. I think it was pretty brave move from
Joss. He has angered fans before by killing people off in his shows, and
he must have expected similar this time, especially given how much
people were looking forward to the movie.

I don't think it was a shit way. Shocking yes, but I don't want all my
entertainment to be predictable and fluffy. Again, that's a matter of
taste, and opinions are always going to vary over the decision to kill
Wash. Interesting that Alan Tudyk was right behind the move, and in fact
suggested Wash as a sympathy kill when the show was still being made.
In the show reavers were portrayed as incredibly dangerous and deadly
creatures. Even Jayne was scared at the mere mention of them. If the
reavers had not killed any of the crew by the end of the movie it would
have seemed strange placed against what we knew from the show. Given the
reputation of reavers, it could be seen as lucky that only one crew
member lost his life to them.

Again that is a matter of opinion. I didn't see it as nonchalance. Did
you see her suicidal advance on the reavers, that not only could have
cost her own life, but lessened the chances of the rest of the crew? She
would never have done something that stupid if she had been thinking
clearly. Her former life as a soldier got her through up to that point.
The reavers arriving pushed her too far.
One thing I would like to have seen is a moment on the ship after the
funeral. Maybe Zoe sat on her bunk, on her own, crying. Given what a
tough woman she is, that would have been a powerful scene to see. It
would also have given the audience time to mourn a little, which had
been lacking as everyone was plunged straight into another battle after
Wash died.
As for the rest of the crew, there was little or no time for them to
react once they realised Wash was dead. There were a couple of funny
lines, but human beings make jokes in dire situations. Gallows humour I
think it's called?
At the end of the day, the Wash death scene was a big moment, and some
people were always going to hate it. I didn't like seeing Wash die, but
I understand why it happened.
I think not watching the show again is a bit over the top. I'm not
saying you are wrong to hate what happened in the movie. Like every
movie, it's down to personal taste. One thing I do recommend is that you
watch the movie again. I have read a few message board posts from people
posting after their first viewing who pretty much said what you did.
Many of them actually felt a lot better about the movie after a second
viewing. Because the shock factor is less second time you are able to
spend more time watching what happens after the death, rather than sit
there with your jaw hitting the floor for the rest of the movie. It is
one hell of an intense ride from the moment the Alliance and Reaver
fleet meet to the moment the Operative tells his team to stand down.
Do yourself a favour. See it again. You may feel better this time. If
you don't, well at least you tried!
Jason.
