The argument in favour of coaxial is that the signal doesn't have to be
transcoded from an electrical interface to light and back again. Sound
quality can be affected by this process, apparently. Optical however can
offer far greater signal cable runs, as the signal doesn't degrade so
easily - a 10m optical cable run shouldn't cause any problems, but
coaxial is not so good over runs of about 3m. Personally, I use coaxial
wherever I can, but in real terms it's pretty difficult to tell the two
apart.
