Too many reasons - lack of perceived demand, access to a master copy,
copyright, processing capacity, who knows? It is very disappointing to
find this sort of situation though. I have a number of UK film releases
that I've had to obtain on inferior R1 NTSC prints simply because they
weren't available in the UK. Actually, this whole topic really irritates
me. It's not only the lack of titles sometimes, but the fact that in a
lot of cases (mainly older stuff), we seem to end-up with a 4:3 crop,
whilst in the US they get widescreen - the Ipcress File is a case in
point. Then there are audio issues - Bombon El Perro (an Argentinian
film) released here in the UK gets DD2.0, whilst in Spain it gets DD5.1.
Next, we have films that have been partially funded here - the UK
Lottery for instance, but we can't actually buy a copy of a film -
Aberdeen is a good example here. Finally (for now) we have the issue of
extras and so forth, which matters to many people.
I really can't understand why distributors and manufacturers do this.
Perhaps it's to deliberately stimulate a demand for non-UK DVDs whilst
still feigning adherence to the region coding. Whatever it is, it p*sses
me right off!
