I don't think he was given any preferential treatment - he did wait for over
2 years. I'm not a great fan by any means, unlike those who seem to be
eulogising at the moment. This link would suggest to me that the guidelines
for allocation are pretty strict and controlled:

It would be interesting if a member of the Royal Family (or leading
politician?) needed a transplant.

As far as I know though his current problems are caused by a kidney
infection and internal bleeding from the bowel - so not sure if they are
directly linked to his replacement liver, though he must have been weakened
by the general damage from his alcoholism. It all depends whether you
accept alcoholism is an illness - I have my doubts as a teetotaler but
clinically it is.
