Multi-region DVD players are available but the fact is seldom publicized
(due to the proximity of Hollywood Types). I have the Phillips which is
multi-region but you wouldn't know it from the packaging. Similarly many of
the Chinese players are hackable but don't bother asking at Best Buy as
they're not aware of region coding.
Similarly many of the TV's can handle PAL but once again it's just not an
advertised feature, my Samsung does but once again not a word of it in the
manual
Unfortunately your friends penchance for having the best of everything might
do him in as it's my experience that the economy models tend to be the
multi-format things
