Well they can only do what they can with what the director sets up I
suppose. If the director isn't overly concerned with what is behind
the camera then the sound engineers don't have as much to work with.

IF the director puts the viewer in the middle of the action, rather
than in front of it, there is more sound going on around the viewer.

I think Any Given Sunday was good for sound IIRC as during the game
sequences the viewer was practically in the huddle.
