It comes down to the term incidental sound, they are not as important
as the front 3 as they are there for required spacial awareness and
effects. you seem to be putting too much emphasis on the rear
speakers, like you should be blasted with sound from all 4 corners all
the time. if they are set up right, you shouldn't notice them at all
uintil they are required. Mostly you get like trees rusling and birds
tweeting. if done naturally you don't even notice because it sound like
it is coming from outside, too loud and you become annoyingly aware of
everything
Turning them up would result in probably hiss and definitely
unrealistic sound. For example a helecoptor coming in over your
shoulder would start really loud and then go unnaturally quiet before
getting to the front.
Set the speakers up with roughly the same volume levels maybe less for
the rears if they are overly close to the listener. you will still get
your background sounds when you need them.
There is a good bit in XMen when Xavier is speaking into Wolverines
mind in the hall when he first wakes up at the school and his voice is
all over the room saying "over here" "Over here" and that comes out
over your right shoulder and is quite startling at first.
