Even without the accidental release, there would have been ways to
crack CSS such as reverse engineering DVD player's firmware for the
key or a dishonest employee in the right place. It would have come at
a different time but eventually CSS had to be cracked.

True. And the harder the big companies tried to fight illegal
recordering, the more likely they'll overlook the obvious. A good
example were the recent CD that only worked in regular CD player and
not PC, killed some iMacs and caused problem with some CD players like
those in some cars. This project took millions to develop and were on
the verge of not being a standard CD. Yet a $0.99 Sharpie broke that.
