They were. Mainly for extras though. Lots of other companies release dvds as
good, if not better, than those (comparing like with like). Some Criterion
releases have also been released by other places, with a better picture than
Criterion did.

I do agree with that. Most of their stuff (especially earlier releases of
older movies) is above & beyond what was available anywhere else. Nowadays
their prices rarely justify the results.
....but anyway, they never claim that they're able to get a better picture
out of a dvd than anyone else can... a slimey marketting-lead "Superbit"
tool to fool tools.
