What does your comment about high school graduate running reactors have
to do with nuclear waste?
The government (and not just in the US) and numerous other institutions
have spent lots of money on nuclear fusion. They just haven't succeeded
in making it work. Think Tokamak, among others.
So far the best bet in nuclear fusion remains energy from the sun.
