Bafta members are not professional DVD watchers, they are filmmakers
and actors, with the same ratio of anoraks to non-techheads as the
general population. Besides, it's not that their regular players
weren't region-free, it's that the special players they got to watch
the screener DVDs, that have customised copy protection, weren't
region-free. Hacking those players would be a bit more involved than
hitting a few codes on the remote.
having said all that, yes, region protection sucks, and it's just
another example of the studios shooting themselves in the wallet.
