Personally, I would go for a proper separates system - player,
amp/receiver and speakers. Integrated systems are fine, but when one bit
dies the whole lot normally needs junking, wich is irritating to say the
least.
You say that you're not a cinema buff, but even with a modest separates
system you'll find yourself becoming more engaged with the film-watching
experience. OK, that sounds trite, but I believe it. A well-produced
picture and sound works wonders.
The 'Net, newsgroups like this and magazines like What Hi-Fi are all
good reference sources.
