The first thing that springs to mind is that the machine includes a
crude video standards converter, so that NTSC discs are output as PAL
video. Look in the menu and see if there's a setting for the playback
mode - usually PAL, NTSC or Auto.
If you're really unlucky, you'll find that it has just PAL or NTSC and
you have to change it depending on which disc you play... and because
it's a recorder it might also find that if you leave it in NTSC mode,
it won't record PAL video!
