The Tevion player from Aldi is pretty good. Plays divx and xvid no problem.
Had the odd one refuse to play, but not many. Only costs 30.00
If you want max codec compatability and some future-proofing, get a media
centre PC or get an xbox with evolution-x media centre installed.
