Almost exactly as above - 6GB Archos Jukebox, bought May 2002, finally
gave up the ghost as an mp3 player November 2005 after 3 1/2 years of
heavy (ab)usage, though still works fine as an external HDD. Replaced
with Archos XS202, 20GB, smaller than a matchbox (even fits in my
jeans coin minipocket) and you can just add mp3s/wma to it and play,
without the need for any software interface.
Would recommend Archos to anyone (and frequently do)
