I don't know if you can get away with using a ibook but I can tell you I
am using a similar system to what you're thinking of buying.
I'm using a 17" with 1gb ram and a superdrive. The thing that seperates
me from you is I do Analog digitizing on the office mac.
I am using firewire 7200 external hds and they work fine. I've not had a
project that has need more than 250g to date.
I really liked the plug and play machine control with the DVcam deck.
