Actually a bit more than 20 years ago. I was in LA with a friend
on our way to a computer manufacturer. His uncle was working at
one of the largest transfer houses extant in LA at that time. He
told us that Kubrick's right hand man was there making the
definitive transfers following the exact notes that Kubrick gave
him.

That had to 1982.
