For these programmes the BBC uses a mixture of Sony VX2000, PD150, VX1000,
and PD100.

I guess they are phasing the older cameras out. They are currently, I
believe, buying the Sony HD camera HVR-Z1E for much of their low-end DV
work.

In other professional usage , I don't know if you've ever seen any of the
Lonely Planet/Pilot guides travel series, but I've been on location with
them and they were shooting with a Sony DSR 300/400 DV camera (and not for
the grungy film look shots - they yse real 8mm for that). Given that these
are travel shows and good images are vital, that's probably about as good as
you need for much (not all) broadcast use.
