I produce and convert a lot of video files for use in Powerpoint for
conferences etc. My best experience with a Windows PC/Laptop is to convert
the video files to WMV. This is because Powerpoint uses Media Player engine
to play video clips and of course Media Player loves WMV files. I do this a
lot with clips sourced from DV or even DVDs and the quality is great.
To convert AVI files I use Windows Media Encoder (free download from MS) and
within it's settings (in various menus etc) I select about 2.5mb/s quality
(for full screen DV AVI files). Most people don't notice the difference
between the converted WMVs and the original AVI. You just insert this into
a blank Powerpoint slide and resize to fit the slide as appropriate.
For MOV files you will need to convert to AVI first (in something like
Premiere) and then import the AVI into Windows Media Encoder. If you have a
MAC you can use Flip4Mac to convert the MOV to WMV.
If you are using Powerpoint on a MAC you can use the MOV file directly
within Powerpoint as in this case Powerpoint uses the Quicktime engine to
play video clips.
