No, the size of the sensor is true 16:9 (that would be 1024x576 pixels for
PAL SD). It is easy to crop a 4:3 picture out of it (720x576, cut off 152
pixels horizontal each side), and then you haven't lost any vertical or
horizontal resolution, you only aren't using part of that resolution which
the camera offers. So you still keep the full amount of pixels.
With an anamorphic image, created out of a 4:3 sensor, you are right of
course. Because here you lower your vertical resolution to 70% of the
original to get the 16:9 picture in the first place.
