Yes.

It is almost one of those things where if you have to ask, seems
likely that you might not want to try it on anything you'll regret
breaking.

Unlikely. And equally (or or more) unlikely is finding a suitable
replacement part. I don't like the idea any more than you do
of sending it in and spending a significant fraction of the purchase
price to replace a $1 part, but there you are....
