I broke several pieces of equipment in my youth by taking
them apart without really knowing what I was doing. Most
of the time I was able to fix them. Sometimes not so much.
Prosumer equipment and even low end broasdcast stuff
is really packed in there tight, with fragile ribbon cables
just waiting to be trashed by pulling on the wrong thing.
I cracked open a laptop by about 1/4" once. I peaked
inside and put the screws back in. It was as though all
of the internals were spring loaded and would scatter
before I could see what came from where. It was
questionable that I would be able to fix the problem
anyway, so I closed it back up and told him to take it
to a pro for repair.
It's easy for me to understand why he might be nervous
about going in there, and would want to ask if this
camera was easy to work on or not. It would make
me nervous too.
