First let me help you with the oldest myth in the books...bigger is not
better.

The critical element in a camera is not how many pixels it has but how
good the lense is that is in front of the camera.

The latest myth in the bigger saga is that 12 is better than 8 which is
better than 6, etc. I have images that were taken with a 1.5mp camera
that are better than some 4 and 5 mp ones that I have seen. The reason
is simply how much better the lense is.

Even on the same camera, the pictures have dramatically different
qualities depending on the lenses. What is amazing is how much better
the lenses are today than just 4-5 years ago.

You might even find that shooting the images on film and then having
the flexabiilty to scan them at whatever DPI you need to yield the best
results.

If I were you I'd find a professional photog to help you in this. They
will help you find camera for your needs.

Just the facts:

Here are the pure numbers with no impact from the lense:
* A 12 megapixel camera has an image size of 4000x3000
* A 6 megapixel camera has an image size of 3000x2000

At 300 DPI those yield 13.33" x 10" and 10"x6.66" images or prints
respectively. That is a net increase of 33% in image size by doubling
the megapixel count. What started as a doubling nets only a 1/3 gain.

Good luck. Keep us informed.
