In most stations, this is done in master control, on the master control
switcher. (It's occasionally done in a production control room in a
live telecast.)
In a smaller operarion, like cable access, it's a bit more
improvisational. In the most basic form, the main "air tab" or
automation/studio output is run downstream (some call it upstream)
THROUGH a character generator. The element enters the picture when a
command is given to the CG to overlay it and remove it. It's dicey: The
CG always has to be on, and a crash can kill your playout.
Here's another way: Run your main playout stream though your control
room, and switch the control room live, and key it like a production!
When done, switch back to your normal playout stream.
Inscriber is good, but it's a Windows computer. Try to find an old
Chyron or Quanta. Much more stable, but limited graphic capability.
