Do you have the hardware acceleration turned off in WMP ?
Go to Tools -> Options ->Performance -> Advanced and make sure the
video mixing renderer, overlays and other performance options are
switched on.
VMR will interfere with your ability to screen-capture stills from the
player, but will greatly increase the display performance, as it's now
handled primarily by the graphics card through DirectX rather than
having the computer's CPU render each display frame unassisted.
