The transition can be seen in the video preview pane at bottom left (for
version 2) when you either scrub the marker in the top time scale along
the timeline or use the transport controls below the preview. You also
need the pictures you're fading between to be on different layers, with
an overlap on the timeline. I normally have the effects layer at the
top, then sound, then any number of video layers below that. The effects
on the top layer need to be set to the required layers for them to work.
So, for example, to fade from the background video stream, which would
be on the bottom layer to a still on a higher layer, line up the effect
block with the start of the picture block, then select the sources in
the properties dialogue box. Without the effect being applied and the
overlap, the default is a straight cut from the lower layer to the
highest layer with video information & the reverse at the end of the
block. The preview's not full size, but gives an idea of how the final
result will appear after rendering.
Again, in version 2, I don't know of any way to generate a transparency
effect, but version 5 may do this. Sorry I can't help more here.
