G'day, Rock.

The Canopus ADVC-100 is a little old now, but still works great,
doesn't wear out, and is the minimum I'd want to use. They were around
300 dollars U.S. last time I checked, but you could probably find one
used on Ebay now. The latest TigerDirect catalog here has a number of
cheaper gadgets for this, but I wouldn't trust a single one of them. In
the $300 U.S. range, you could just as well buy a consumer one-chip DV
camcorder with analog-inputs to use for this job, that lets you
transcode the VHS and Hi-8 on the fly into your computer, and you also
have the camcorder to use as a deck itself, and to shoot DV with as you
transition out of the analog formats. I'd look at one of the Canon or
Sony models for this. Looking at it that way, buy the camcorder, get
the transcoding for free, fair dinkum! :-)
