Okay, gentlemen, I put it to you and your combined knowledge to
recommend the best camera for an unusual project of mine.
My project is to walk across most of continental Europe next year. It
should take me about six months. I'll be taking a DV cam with me to
document my journey. (More information about the project is available
at http://www.madridtokiev.com.)
My goal is to get the best image and sound possible in the smallest
package possible. I've narrowed it down to a few cameras... which ones
would you recommend? I want to spend about 2 to 5 grand, all
accounted.
Sony HDR-HC1 -- handled this at a Best Buy, absolutely love the compact
size and discreteness of it. Will this give me a better picture than
the SD models below? Also, I intend to use an external shotgun mic to
record sound, so how badly will not having an XLR input set me back?
Lastly, is the HD footage going to be as much of a nightmare to edit as
I imagine?
Panasonic AG-DVX100B -- Heard a lot of nice things about this camera.
I like the 24p mode but it's not a dealbreaker for me since I could
always do that in post. It's hard for me to tell how big and bulky
this is from looking at photos online. Is it as unwieldy as the
HVR-FX1? I decided that camera was too large for me to consider taking
on a trip like this.
Canon GL2 -- decent camera, have used it. No XLR input. I do like the
images and the size is about as large as I'd want to carry along with
me.
Panasonic AG-DVC30 -- will this shoot better in low-light than the
HDR-HC1? Also looks pretty small and compact, a kind of
younger-brother to the DVX100B.
Sony DSR-PD150 -- have used the PD-100, this is obviously a better
model but seems a lot bigger and I've read that some of the above
models are better cameras.
Any thoughts? The best thing would be for me to find a showroom around
here in Chicago where I could handle all these different cameras and
make a decision based on that. I don't like having to look at
everything online.
Best,
Lee
