Gary,
Ulead VS9 has earned my enthusiasm only because the expensive alternatives
like Vegas and Final Cut Studio Pro HD are just so slow. I spent (literally)
years bashing Ulead since their software was just so awfully buggy, and
crashed in the midst of doing productive work without leaving any way to
recover. Now they seem to have a clean, reliable, and (most important)
extremely FAST product, and I am among their strongest supporters.
To answer your questions:
1. Yes it does regular SD.
2. Yes it does real time preview (including full screen, which neither Vegas
or FCP do without extra displays !!)
3. Yes you do need an HDV plug-in, but Ulead has been giving it away at no
extra charge with their $79 purchase of VS9
4. And, finally, yes, it also includes a DVD authoring program (admittedly a
weak one).
Sorry if I have sounded overly zealous. It is delightful to finally find
something which works quickly on a single P4 box without a lot of expense
and complexity. I will also add that VS9 has a pretty lame cuts editing and
trimming mode. I prefer to use VideoReDo now for HDV editing, but VS9 works
fine if you get the hang of it.
