I'm not a pro, so take this for what it's worth.

I do a lot of travel videography with a VX2000, which is almost the same
size and weight as the PD170. I use Manfrotto 3444D carbon fiber sticks
with a Bogen 3160 fluid head. The sticks are perfect for travel -- they're
4-section, so they fold very small, have quick locks for easy set-up, and
have a reversible center column. As I recall, they'll handle up to 11
pounds. They weigh under 4 pounds and are very easy to cart around. I'm
less thrilled with the 3160 head -- it's okay on tilt, but seems to have a
little stickiness on pan. It may be my head, though, as I bought it used on
eBay. Bogen makes a smaller and lighter fluid head which, if I recall
correctly, is called an RC2. I had one for a while, and liked its
performance better than the 3160. I got rid of it only because it wouldn't
work with an angle bracket that I use for digital still photography.
