if I was going to to try to do this setup in one take, I would shoot
the wide shot in high-def wide screen, highest resolution available,
which lets you zoom in and 'blow up" your individual players without as
much picture degradation as Standard def shooting. If you have more
pixels to play with, you have more latitude in the blow-ups before it
falls apart. Look at that REM video set in front of a swimming pool to
see what I mean: one master shot that was zoomed-in digitally. This is
a close cousin of the effect you described. I would shoot and post in
2k resolution then mix it down to Sd resolution for the final product,
to help hide any quality loss from the manipulations.
but.........
There is another way to think about the effect: put it all together
sdrawkcab in the shoot, then edit it. WTH? I mean: Shoot each member
full-frame head-to-toe single in chromakey, separately, playing to the
same pre-recorded track, and shoot a full frame background plate of the
stage and etc. Composite them all together on the stage, but keep each
one on his own video layer. Now, manipulating them for the shot you
envisioned becomes way simpler, while maintaining a sharp quality when
they are blown-up... because the 'blown up' part is actually *normal*
footage. See, you can get away with way more in *shrinking* them down
to make them all fit on the stage together, than you could trying to
enlarge small/medium shots from one master to become close-ups. With
them all on separate key channels, you can even "sell" the illusion of
them all being on the stage together better by having them move in
front of and behind each other to enhance depth. That would only take a
little bit more planning and practice to execute. And you can do it
easy enough with chromakey technology on the Vegas, you wouldn't need
any special compositing software for this.
