Peter,
recording from a speaker never the best option sound and otherwise,
use a low gain mic(dynamic)and position urself at a comfortable
distance so as to not blow ur ears and place the mic at a comfortable
postion for good pickup.
a low gain mic will not distort yr recording,speakers have very high
spl level blowing of most mics or damaging them peranently,so a low
gain mic help you have control over levels and off course the ambient
pick up is less(if that is a problem)
but requesting the audio guy or even sweettalking him is a better
option to get good sound,,he can give you a line level feed anytime
from a spare o/p .
