I had posted this before but since we're on this subject again, here
goes. My band has recorded a song that has most of the lyrics from
"Smells Like Teen Spirit" but has a different melody, chord progression
and time signature. You can listen to it at
www.yourhomestudio.blogspot.com. My understanding was that as far as
copyrights go, a song was the lyrics and melody, nothing else. If I
understand this correctly, as long as the lyrics and melody are exactly
the same, you can just obtain the mechanical license and you're ok even
if you decide to add a horn part. Have said that, if I obtain the
mechanical license for the "Smells like Teen Spirit", it doesn't cover
our version this because it's a derivative?
