For any full-body head to toe shot, the curving cove you get with the
vinyl is essential. Just painting the floor around the base is never
going to work as well, particularly if you are using the lower-end
equipment and software. Do it right, do it the way I described, or
spend countless hours doing rotoscope work later... or just giving up
in the end. It's up to you. Just because you may not be shooting
full-body shots *today* doesn't mean you never will. You can't do a
*really* good weatherman bit without it, for example. But consider: the
beauty of good Ck setups, especially for school productions, is you
need not stress out about location shooting and all the hassles, costs,
and time that takes: you bring the locations to YOU, whether that's a
virtual-reality world, or a re-creation of something historical, or a
dramatic setting, or just really HUGE graphics... you need the
full-body shot capability at some point. The vinyl is really cheap: you
probably spent more money on itunes downloads or buying xbox titles
this week than you will on this, and it will last until you get sick of
it and tear it down. if you ask really nice at the flooring store, with
a note from the principal, it's not impossible they may just GIVE you a
hunk of the flooring from some roll-end that will never sell because
it's discontinued or ugly or something. Long as that bottom side is
clean and without creases, it's perfect for your use anyhow. I once
got such a roll-end for a set wall project for five bucks, just so the
guys could get rid of it.
If you didn't go to the Dv.com lighting forums site yet and look up
John Jackman's extensive online articles on chromakey for DV with
pictures and diagrams, you are really shorting yourself. Look closely
at the way he lit his garage rig, in particular. It's free, just
register, and you can ask him anything and usually get an answer within
the hour.
