Wireless microphones cheaper than $400~450 tend to be disposable
plastic toys and many of us avoid them if at all possible. Definitely
not a sound investment (you may take or leave the pun as you wish!)
Your first-person anecdote appears to support this theory.
Yes, many wedding videographers seem to have found small
inexpensive MiniDisc recorders a viable alternative to wireless
mics. MUCH better quality at much lower price than any
decent wireless. Of course, there are tradeoffs (lack of monitor,
extra work to lay audio in separately, etc.)
