I'm kind of surprised there isn't a plug-in or an inexpensive
off-the-shelf
package where you just type in the text in the appropriate font and it
creates the effect automatically.

Apple's title-making program LiveType can do this. I usually use the
"start with the finishe dword and sequentially erase in reverse" trick,
but other folks use a Wacom tablet and something like camtasia or
SnapzPro to capture a "movie" of the actual writing, which then could
be keyed into a scene. Each method is valid, and each I feel takes
about the same time to do, in the end. If you are wanting to capture
actual handwriting, the campasia/snaps pro/tablet method would be a
better choice.
A real low-tech way: put a camera under a glass table, pointing up, and
use black markers on translucent paper, lit from above. Use the DVE to
flip the footage back from it's reversed original, then key it.
