The WAVES restoration package has plugs that do exactly
that. If you have a clip of the background noise all
alone, you let the program learn the noise then it
takes it out. It can solo the removed sound so you can
hear how much of the wanted sound is removed and adjust
that way too.
Works like a charm. I have used it to remove record
noise and crowd noise. The most amazing demo was
removal of the background noise practically obscuring
the voice of a guy talking at Comdex.
