The HVX-200 has been hailed as the saviour of the indy filmmaker. By using
DVCProHD compression it is claimed by Panasonic that it will provide
superior image quality to HDV format cameras from Canon and Sony et al.
Well unfortunately that has not exactly happened. In tests conducted by
Adam Wilt on several cameras the HVX-200 faired the least well in terms of
resolution resolution approx. 540 lines. So poor they are going to re-check
the results. I had a copy of the original DV100 cheerleaders/basketball
game doing the rounds and though then that the footage didn't show the
detail one might expect. In fact I found the footage very "video-ey." The
hassle and expense of working with P2 or a very very expensive hard disk
does not seem to be worthwhile for the mediocre image.

The surprise (surprised me anyway) winner of the Adam Wilt camera tests, by
a short nose, was the JVC HD100. AW concluded that all the cameras
performed so closely that there was no outright winner all displayed
positives and all could produce stunning images in the right hands. Don't
take my word for it, www.dv.com. Its a pretty good start to a series of
tests to determine the relative merits of the affordable HD cameras.

There are more camera tests planned with www.hdforindies.com and Adam Wilt.

Be advised that dvxuser isn't the best place to go for impartial views of
cameras. Barry Green only has eyes for Panasonic..
