So, at least parts of the film has been transferred to digital, then
processed, and re-transferred to film.
And, if your description is true(and I have no reason to doubt it), I
think they did a lousy job at producing intermediary frames.
The opening scene clearly shows two tennisballs seemingly glued together
passing over the net...
