FCP has a number of good forums. There's one on Creative Cow -
http://forums.creativecow.net/index.html , Ken Stone -
http://www.kenstone.net/ , and at 2-pop
http://www.uemedia.net/CPC/2-pop/ubbthreads/postlist.php?Cat=0&Board=FCPEditing
.. Lots and lots of people who can help you. And don't be intimidated
by FCP - there's a bit of a learning ciurve at the beginning, but soon
you'll be flying. I've taught it to many people, and they're all
editing after about three hours. Not great artists maybe, but able to
join shots together ok.
You may not have much luck though with the lighting - all an editing
system can do is up the brightness, contrast, gamma. There's no
substitute for decent light on the subject.
For compression, FCP is Quicktime native of course, and the best format
is H264, but it takes an age to encode. Sorensen 3 goes faster and is
pretty good. You could export as an avi, and maybe use xVid or Divx.
