The programs I've used (Avid Xpress Pro HD and Liquid Edition) edit the
MPEG-2 stream natively and only recompress for the final output to
tape, if you want a master on HDV. Not sure about Edition, but Avid use
their DNxHD codec for rendered footage in the edit if you add effects.
As for distribution, that's the only real problem right now. I've been
making DVDs with the video downconverted to SD for playback and HD
MPEG-2 files readable in a DVD-ROM drive, plus giving out DNxHD files
in case they need to re-edit (but at 120-185 Mbps they're not small!).
