Here's one way to do a comparison:
Watch COPS on Fox (or Court TV).
Different crews use different equipment on the segments but, in
general, the audio is done this way:
The camera has two XLR inputs. One is a wireless lav, on the cop who is
the focus of the segment. The second is a shotgun on a short pole, fed
wireless to a second receiver, which picks up the "second cop" or other
cops, the victims, the perpetrators ("the actors", Dallas police call
them!). The audio guy tries to get to the scene of the audio but stay
just out of camera range.
Granted, most of this is outside, but some is inside. The lav always
sounds good, but the shotgun is better in some situations than others.
Listen for yourself. (Actually, the shotgun doesn't sound too bad most
of the time.) Listenable, audible, but not as good as close-miking.
(Some of the cameras also use a camera-mounted short shotgun on track 3
as a backup, if the camera offers the additional tracks.)
