Inspect the playing surface carefully before playing. They are
commonly scratched. Small scratches, or those from inside to out,
shouldn't be a big problem. Radial scratches in a circle can be more of
an issue. It's the luck of the draw. You'll probably have most problems
with heavily in demand discs, or old discs that are out of print.
Just which player do you have? Some Sony players have a service menu
with the ability to calibrate themselves. I did this with my ancient
DVP-S530D, and it seems to have helped a bit.
